Lola Rennt

Last night I watched Run Lola Run for about the twentieth time. Have you seen it? It's one of my favorite movies, and I never manage to get sick of it. Run Lola Run is a German film about a girl who has to come up with $100,000 in 20 minutes to help get her boyfriend out of trouble. This movie's unique in a lot of ways but mostly because it is cut up into 3 chapters. Each chapter is a different look at what could possibly happen to Lola in these 20 minutes she has to come up with the money. Franka Potente (from Bourne Identity) stars in it and does a great job. I hadn't watched the movie in quite a while, so I almost forgot how much I love the flashback scene where Lola is talking to her boyfriend and asks him to try and describe his feelings for her. I think the scene's pretty funny, 'cause it's typical of what happens when girls try and ask their boyfriends about their feelings. The clip I found includes the few minutes leading up to the flashback, so you have to wait a bit to get to it.

I worked for Franklin Covey when I lived down in Provo several years ago. It was a requirement for all employees to own a Franklin planner, so I got one. I ended up only using the "Notes" section of the planner and filled it up with all sorts of stuff that I felt worthy of writing down for future reference. I'm always writing stuff down that I feel is important but end up just filing the notes away and never looking at them again. I came across my old planner recently and found the following jotted down on a few of the pages in the Notes section; it has to have been over 4 years since I've looked through this thing:

QUOTES

"Experience is a hard teacher, because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards." - Vernon Sanders Law

"No matter how far you have gone on the wrong road, turn back." - Turkish Proverb

"Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon." - ?

"Procrastination--Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now." - ?

"Sometimes, to get ready for the next great thing in your life, you have to say goodbye to the first great thing." - ?

Can I Have Your Number?

Melanie and Luke showed me this a little while ago. Ladies, have you ever had this happen to you? My guess is that yes, you have. This happens all too often to unsuspecting victims all around the world, causing innocent girls everywhere to cut their losses and abandon their lunches. If this hasn't happened to you, beware; you will most likely be approached in food courts of shopping malls or while trying to relax at your favorite community park.

The Small and Simple Things

I started working in the graduation office on campus a few weeks ago and really like it so far. I get to help students get set for graduation, so it's really fun to see them come in all excited about finally being able to get their degrees. This past Friday, as part of my job, I had to attend the big general commencement at the Dee Events Center. It was nice to be there and all, but the University's commencement wasn't half as cool as the kindergarten graduation I was able to attend the day before. Check out these "during" and "after" graduation highlights in honor of Isaac Philemon...

DURING......................... AFTER
DURING: Miss Maya attentively watching her big brother on stage.

AFTER: Maya being restrained by her dad after getting caught running loose through the elementary school hallways. Sometimes Dads are big drags.

DURING................................. AFTER
DURING: Luke playing Nintendo next to his Grandpa Reid.

AFTER: Luke playing Nintendo next to his big brother.

DURING ........................... AFTER
DURING: Isaac playing it cool onstage with his classmates.

AFTER: The New Graduate! In all my life, I've never been more proud of someone wearing a trash bag. Way to be, Isaac!

Dawn Porter

For about a year, my friend Katie headed up this amazingly popular blog called Sister Skinny. Katie doesn't post on this blog anymore, but check it out if you'd like some great tips on how to diet and exercise in a healthy way. Earlier this month, Katie posted about this really cool documentary that was made by a 28-year-old British writer (Thanks Katie!). This writer decided to conduct an experiment on herself to see what it actually takes to force your body into becoming a size 0. The documentary is great, and this British writer, Dawn Porter, is so hilarious. The video is cut up into 6 segments on YouTube, each about 10 minutes long. Find the first segment here. I found this Dawn Porter to be so funny that I went in search of other videos she may have made. I found one she did on the magic of airbrushing and digital manipulation used by magazines to make their cover girls look flawless. I thought this to be pretty fascinating and a great reminder of how the models on covers of magazines aren't really what they appear to be.

I also found this one with Dawn celebrating Dirty Dancing. I thought this was really funny since I remember loving that movie when I was younger...Okay, I still love it. Anyway, I'm officially a fan of Dawn Porter...Thank goodness not all British girls are like Victoria Beckham.

Dsylexia

After working on her final paper for 16 hours straight in her lucky 7UP t-shirt, the girl looked over at the clock sitting on her nightstand, let out a big sigh of relief and thought, "AhYes, finished up right in time to email this sucker to Dr. Hadley." The girl felt triumphant, victorious, refreshed even, like someone who just got their second wind in a long distance race after pushing through several miles. After all, the girl was notorious for her diehard habit of procrastination, and almost prided herself in her amazing ability to complete projects at the very last minute, never submitting any piece of work past its deadline. "Ha, TAKE THAT Dr. Hadley!" she mumbled to herself as she attached her research paper on dyslexia to the email addressed to her professor. "You can't trip me up with your wacky Saturday morning deadlines," she thought. "Yep, this baby's perfect," she said as she clicked on the Send button. The email was sent, and the girl felt good. She pulled it off again and gloried in the fact that she always did her best work under the high pressure of a quickly approaching deadline. The girl got up from her desk and was about to finally lay down and rest when she thought it couldn't hurt to take one last look at the paper she just sent off. She bent over her keyboard and opened up the file for one more glance at her masterpiece. She scrolled down page after page of her final paper on dyslexia, basking in the glow of each well-crafted sentence, each cleverly put together paragraph, every.....wait a sec, what was this that the girl just spotted?....

Yep, there they were, cruelly staring back at her within the concluding paragraph of the paper. Not once, not twice, but three times did the girl find the word dyslexia misspelled in the conclusion of her paper.

Yes, the conclusion--the section of the paper that was meant to serve as the grand finale of the girl's written work. The girl had seemingly switched around the 'y' and 's' in 'dyslexia.' The irony of it all was almost unbearable. "Maybe Dr. Hadley will think that I made the mistake on purpose...'ya know, for dramatic effect," the girl desperately thought.

Hmmm, maybe not.

And the moral of the story is: Don't ever stay up all through the night working on a paper, especially not in your lucky 7UP t-shirt, which will end up to be not so lucky.
